State horse trials 2014 draw

If you had 30, it would be high. Those are the things we need to fit into our thinking as we work our way toward tweaking this system. That is the point of this discussion. The data is proving that YEH graduates are working their way up the ladder. They are not that old. This is not the end of their careers by a long shot.

We are doing it pretty well, we are not doing it wrong. We need another two niches in the ladder that are attractive for people to compete for. Holekamp presented a few options to the attendees for consideration in hopes of receiving support or further ideas from the crowd for ideas to present to the USEA BOG. By far, the most supported option Holekamp mentioned was to host two national championships, one on each coast, at the end of the year. The biggest question called forward for discussion, however, was should that championship be offered in a short or long-format?

And at those shorts, we have organizers like Morven Park who will hold a 6- or 7-year-old competition on its own and you could offer prize money, not as big as the prize money you would offer for the championship, but it gets the word out and gets people already thinking that something is going on here.

In response, Musgrave spoke about the young horse classes that they offered in at the two and three-star level. So we encourage everybody to give it a shot. All good things. So the pedigree is definitely interesting and inspiring for a potential event horse career, at least in my opinion. California Chrome has won at distances from 5. Instead, notice how he can win over a distance of ground multiple wins a mile and an eighth or more , and over both dirt and synthetic.

They say a good horse can run on anything, and that seems to be true here. He has 12 starts so far, which is a pretty good load for a spring three-year-old. This shows consistency and soundness, being fit mentally and physically to withstand steady training. And winning in graded stakes company? Why do I consider racing success useful for non-racing sport?

The interesting thing? Back to California Chrome. I like his pedigree, I love his race record. California Chrome shows a nice overall balance with proportionate parts that blend well together.

His neck comes nicely up out of his shoulder, which has good length if just a bit upright. The front end suggests good reach and length of stride through the shoulder. His topline is smooth and strong, showing a nice length of back, and good loin connection. His hind end looks powerful with good angles in his hip and hocks to drive well under his body. He has a strong chest and deep heartgirth with plenty of room for lung capacity.

The final piece we have to evaluate is his movement. While his gallop is remarkably efficient, smooth and powerful, his trot and canter appear a bit stilted. Some of this is due to being at the track; many OTTBs will show vast improvement in their trot with proper training as their muscles change, but there are limits to how much better it will get.

In both canter and gallop, he uses his hind end well underneath his body and moves relatively uphill, not heavy nor on his forehand. He shows nice reach through his shoulder and fairly correct flight, with little wasted motion paddling or winging. Could California Chrome make a nice eventing prospect? Best of luck to California Chrome and all his connections as they chase history in the Belmont.
