While you may not be familiar with the theme, the fun thing about this mod is just appreciating the wackiness of Japanese culture.
Made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the classic game, More Super Mario Kart is one of those mods that pays tribute to what made the game great. Adding 20 new courses — to compliment the 20 existing ones — this mod aims to create levels as faithfully accurate to the original level designs as possible. Playing through this mod feels like you got 2 for the price of 1 with your classic copy of Super Mario Kart.
Playing as the original all-star Mario universe cast is great. Featuring iconic characters such as Bomberman, Pacman and a Cactuar, this character mod for Super Mario Kart will have you loving every minute of your race time. Mario Kart R takes things to a whole new level with enhanced graphics, a handful of new courses, new music and introduces the lovable Kirby as a playable character in place of Toad. The colors and backgrounds are different, the graphics are quite different, and in many ways this feels like a true successor to the original.
Just with its own sense of flair. Altering the difficulty level of this already challenging game, the Crazy Tracks mod does just what you think it would: adds some infuriatingly difficult tracks to test your mettle on. Another fantastic mod for finding out who has the best driving skills in Super Mario Kart, this will have you and your friends fighting it out on some of the craziest tracks you can imagine.
A good way to extend the replayability of the game significantly and this gives you something to really test your skills on. Or in this case, a lot more challenging. Hyper Street Kart is the mod that gives you the best game crossover you never knew you needed: Street Fighter and Mario Kart.
A complete overhaul of the game making it almost unrecognizable, yet keeping the addictive gameplay that we all know and love. Like Mario Kart R number 6 , this mod offers an incredible amount of new content ranging from an entirely new cast of characters, to new backgrounds based on real locations such as Paris and even new graphics.
This is much easier on a computer so an emulator might be the easiest choice to test this out. The idea here is to make the gaming experience that much more enjoyable by slightly adjusting the classic formula. Leaving no stone unturned, this mod edits all 20 racing tracks and even all of the battle tracks to give the original game a facelift. Mixing two incredibly popular franchises often brings fans from both series together. And this SpongeBob mod is no exception.
This mod really is a complete overhaul of all graphics, music, and levels. Super SpongeBob Kart adds all of your favorite characters from the show, all new battle stages and bonuses, new SpongeBob inspired level designs, and a whole lot more. I love how the camera angle is tilted just in the right diagonal angle so that you can appreciate depth without abandoning the side-scrolling perspective entirely. You can play as many characters from the Mario universe such as Luigi, Wario, fan-favorite Waluigi, and Mario himself.
It features new stars to get in its many custom levels, all of which present a considerably greater difficulty than your average vanilla SM64 scenario. That includes most boss fights, which now have added challenges like having to swing Bowser higher to hit the bombs. Once you clear it you could go on to play Super Mario 74 Extreme Edition, which is a more absurd, Kaizo-level challenge.
I believe in showing respect and appreciation for pioneering efforts in any field. This massive ROM hack was one of the first ones with any mainstream appeal outside of the hardcore ROM hacking community. It features stars to collect in some excellent levels, introduces new enemies, and has a revamped soundtrack that gives it the feel of a true sequel. With updated bosses, new enemies, and remixed music that includes some original compositions made especially for the hack, it feels like an entirely fresh take on the SM64 formula.
It includes tons of custom assets, new bosses made from scratch, and even new power-ups. And getting each one of the new stars presents several unique challenges. Super Mario Kart changed the rules of driving games and provided the world with one of the most addictive multiplayer experiences ever. Super SpongeBob Kart is an artfully crafted hack for lovers of both SMK and SpongeBob bound to bring fans of both the franchises together for a silly and enjoyable time.
It is always nice to be able to play around a few different maps as, as great as SMK is and continues to be enjoyable, it can start to show its age with the limited number of maps and the limitations of the game that did not allow for the most variety in terms of thrills on every map.
Some of the best parts of this hack comes with the theme of SpongeBob in general when looking at sprites throwing Conch Shells at one another and jelly fish springing up from the ground to block your back.
This hack shows a great amount of effort in reskinning the game and could have only been better if all the music had been changed as well. The entire game has been reworked graphically to include thematically accurate tiles, characters, and items. Everything has been faithfully recreated and this almost looks like it could be an officially released crossover title for Super Mario Kart and SpongeBob.
It is not shown on the character selection screen, but it feels like the different players play the same as their counterparts as far as placement goes Mr. Krabs being Donkey Kong Jr. The levels all feel well designed and just as balanced and somewhat dastardly as the original levels.
All the sound effects in the game remain as they were in the original but this hack does include some changes to the music for a few of the tracks and on the track completion screen. So is this game worth a try? Super SpongeBob Kart adds some visual variety to SMK and strangely brings together any fans of either SMK or SpongeBob with some charming graphics and reskinning of characters and items to match the comedic underwater franchise. While you will not find anything spectacular in the realm of gameplay changes or unique features, this is a solid graphical hack that provides a new aesthetic for SMK.
